The story of Kein Pächter

This site will continuously follow the developments of Susanna’s fascinating story of making her own wine.

It all started by the end of 2019 when the tenant of one of Susanna’s vineyards decided not to continue to cultivate that particular area of about 5000 m2 anymore.
Susanna’s parents have been making vine for decades until they decided end of last century to not continue to make wine themselves anymore but leased the vineyards to local wine-makers in the area around Stammersdorf and Hagenbrunn.
So Susanna tried to find a new tenant for that vineyard in Breitenweg in Stammersdorf. But that turned out to be not that easy to say the least, especially after the COVID-19 pandemic also hit winemakers not only but also in the area in and around Vienna. By the way did you know that Vienna is the capital with the largest area of vineyards in the world?
So in the early months of 2020, even before the Corona-Crisis hit the world Susanna and her daughters, foremost Anna, started to think about the idea to start to cultivate the vineyard themselves.
But even though that Susanna grew up with the wine-making business, she never ever thought that she will start making her own wine and even more challenging, she felt that she has no idea of how to do that.
Nevertheless as May approached and after she has spoken to a number of befriended wine-makers who encouraged her that she will for sure be able to handle the task quite well, the decision was taken to make her own wine.

So now the equipment like tanks, pumps and filters have been renewed in order to have a fresh start with brand-new stuff and some works such as pressing of the grapes has been outsourced to a neighborhood wine-maker from Strebersdorf, who also helps with seldomly needed heavy equipment as tractors or similar.

You may wonder where the rather unusual name Kein Pächter which would translate to No Tenant comes from. It simply tells the story of that little vineyard in two simple words.

The first ever harvest took place on September 30th with about 25 family and friends helping to get the grapes in and we are all anxiously awaiting what time and Susanna’s wine-making skills with the help and experience of her father and mother will lead to.

The result and all other exciting developments can be followed on this website dedicated to the story of Kein Pächter.
